Avrum and Sheila first looked into solar panels when Avrum started to think about retirement. “We were looking for ways to manage our future living costs. Energy costs are a big budget item, and the prices fluctuate a lot. We discovered that solar panels basically lock in your energy rates for decades, because you’re making your own power at a fixed cost,” said Avrum.
Sheila saw other, longer-lasting benefits: “We have two children, and hopefully soon, some grandchildren and we want to feel good about the world we’re leaving behind for them,” said Sheila. “We recycle and turn off appliances when we’re not using them and such, but we wanted to do something that made a big difference. When I see those solar panels on our roof, I feel we’ve made a big statement to our kids about the importance of doing your part for the planet and the next generation.”
“The more we learned about solar panels, the more we wondered why we didn’t do this earlier,” said Avrum. "They take about two days to install, there’s no maintenance, and for the next thirty years, they make clean energy.”
Avrum’s biggest surprise was discovering that his monthly energy savings more than covered the cost to service the home equity loan he took out to finance their system. “Our panels were cash-flow positive from day one,” said Avrum. “It’s like we’re getting our electricity for free!”
Sheila and Avrum had one question for Astrum Solar: “What if we move? While we plan to be in our home for a long time, who knows?” said Avrum. “Maybe we’ll decide to move in a few years when our house starts to feel too big, without the kids. We would hope that the new owners would be thrilled to have solar panels, but Astrum Solar’s answer made us really happy – Astrum Solar can move our panels if we move. Now that we’ve gone solar, we can’t imagine going back!”
