Science teachers John and Alycia have always done their part to help the earth, so when they had the choice of buying a new car or adding solar panels to their home, they bought solar panels. “It is the gift that keeps on giving,” explains John. “And, unlike a new car, it doesn’t depreciate on day one.”

The Lees simply did an online search for “solar power” and were directed to the Astrum Solar website and solar calculator. They received a response from the company’s local solar consultant on the same day. “The website was unbelievably friendly and they were a fountain of information on everything solar, including how to finance it,” says John. “We appreciated their relaxed, no pressure sales approach.”

For Alycia, the use of the most advanced microinverter technology was a big advantage over more traditional inverter technology, which requires more installation work. Also, both she and John can access their solar panel website performance monitor on their classroom smart boards.

“The fact that I can pull up our solar system monitor any time – including in my high school classroom – is a huge difference,” says Alycia. “It’s now a regular part of my lesson plan. We know exactly what our panels are doing at any time.”

The lessons learned from going solar are also being taught at home. The couple’s children are big supporters of the solar panels. “I’m happy because we are helping the earth,” says daughter Katarina. “I’m glad we are doing it because we are saving the earth. Not many people do it,” says son Jay.
