Ariel and his family are supporters of solar and sustainable energy solutions. He is in the process of completing his Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Energy and Environmental Science, and he has been studying how to implement solar energy – the plan for how to do it and take it to the next step on a large scale. He wanted do his part to show others the benefits of solar.

“I want to show my children and others that there are better ways to produce power than what has been accomplished in the past,” said Ariel. “The process of thinking about new and more sustainable ways of producing power helped to drive my decision to implement solar.”

When it came time to finding an organization to work with, Ariel was looking for a company who could answer all his technical questions. Astrum Solar was able to provide spreadsheets so he could look at all the energy production calculations, and took a comprehensive business approach, handling everything from start to finish: “Their solar consultant even met me at a Starbuck’s for an extra meeting to answer all my questions.”

I want to show my children and others that there are better ways to produce power than what has been accomplished in the past. My wife and I now attempt to conserve more energy to make the solar investment even more valuable to us.

Another key factor for Ariel was Astrum Solar’s ability to provide an upfront payment for the value of his SRECs. Astrum’s pricing strategy was able to reduce his upfront costs by 10-15%. Ariel explained, “Solar has been around for so long and I just feel like it is the right thing to do. Today, we have the data, analyses, tools and support so that solar can be accomplished by many more folks. The state solar grant and other incentives also made a big difference to reduce our costs, and help make solar a reality for us.”

Ariel also shared how his family’s and others’ behaviors have changed since he was able to implement solar in his home. “Family members and friends are now more receptive because they see the direct impact of solar. Once you start thinking differently from an energy standpoint your behavioral patterns start to change,” said Ariel. “My wife and I now attempt to conserve more energy to make the solar investment even more valuable to us. Our electric bills are only $10-$30 per month because we now have the tools to reduce our energy consumption. The electric bills averaged $80-$100 per month before we started producing our own power. I was hoping for about a 50% offset, and am happy to say that I believe we will be averaging closer to 70%, with the potential to add to that in the future as states and localities begin to offer credits for net metering.”
