Don and Lauren started thinking about going solar several years ago, for environmental reasons. Being a scientist, Don did thorough research before making a decision. “What put us over the top”, said Don, “was learning about how financially reasonable it is now, with government energy grants and the tax aspects.”
Don and Lauren had several solar installers make presentations before choosing Astrum Solar. “I would encourage people to be educated in person”, advised Don. “Whatever hesitation they have will be gone.”
They thought through everything, all possible scenarios, even moving. Two key selling points for us were that they offer microinverters and that they offer upfront payments for the value of your energy credits.

Going solar has been rewarding for the Smalls. “I’m very happy we did it”, said Don. “I’ve been talking it up with everyone at work. It has a better ROI than most investments, and it’s fun to go out and watch your meter run backward.” There was only one unexpected outcome for Don: “I find myself getting depressed on cloudy days. I’m sure I’ll get over that eventually!”
The Smalls’ panels supply about 70% of their electrical power, but they have bigger plans. “We’re going to expand our system so that we generate enough power for 100% of our electric needs, including plugging in the electric cars we’re planning to get. That will decrease our carbon footprint even more!"
