When the Barrows designed their home they intentionally set it by where solar south is. It was Jan’s idea to use passive solar to make the home more energy efficient. From the day they moved in 15 years ago, David started tracking their energy usage and expenses on a monthly basis. Their many additional energy efficient projects are well documented, as are the large electricity rate hikes their power company passed through when the utility companies deregulated.

I am very picky. I wanted it the way I wanted it and Astrum was the company that met every criteria I had. And I had a lot of them.

“I have considered adding solar panels for the past 10 years, but until recently it was cost prohibitive. Once I made our home more efficient, I was finally able to cover our entire electricity load with our available roof space,” said David. When it was time to select a solar panel installer, David was just as thorough in the analysis he used to evaluate the six companies he considered. “I am very picky. I wanted it the way I wanted it and Astrum was the company that met every criteria I had. And I had a lot of them.”

It was important to David that installers educate him on the technology, specifically the benefits of microinverters. He had already spoken to engineers at Enphase, the manufacturer of the microinverters, and wanted to have all his system questions answered and be able to run what if design scenarios. Astrum Solar took the time to answer all David’s questions and the company’s unique buy-back guarantee and financing terms were also pluses for David during his decision-making.

Two summers ago the Barrows were paying more than $14.05 a day for energy. At today’s energy prices the energy they were using would cost $16.51. This summer after installing both a geothermal unit and 94 solar panels, it’s only costing them about $.17 cents a day. Their most recent electric bill was only $4.81. And, as the Barrows continue to reduce their energy usage, David expects his utility company will be paying him soon for the excess energy their solar system is sending back to the utility grid.

“It’s fun to know you are not paying a power company anymore, know that everything is as green as possible, and know you didn’t give up anything to do it,” said David.
